Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 2 Verse 18

 #Bhagavad-Gita

In verse 16th verse of Chapter 2,  Lord Krishna had revealed that SAT (Existence, the Absolute Unchanging Reality) has no non-existence, whereas ASAT ( the changing reality which is mithya)  has no (independent) existence. Then in Verse 17, SAT was revealed as that which is the ALL-PERVADING existence which is indestructible.

In Verse 18, ASAT or mithya  which includes this whole universe that includes the body-mind-sense complex, will be described.

These bodies that belong to the Self are perishable (antavantah).   The Self is described in this verse as nitya – eternal, anashina– indestructible meaning which cannot be destroyed by any means, and aprameya - never an object of knowledge.

Here the self is described as shariiri -  meaning that which obtains in the body…. So that which is intimately associated with the body. Earlier Krishna has said that the Self is all-pervading (yena sarvam idam tatam)  and now here it is said that which is within the body. It is like all-pervading space within a pot, which we can call as pot-space. Space is all-pervading and it is within the pot also.  The pot is a container whose boundaries  cannot limit the space which is one. If the pot breaks, the space ‘within it’ does not break. In fact the pot is in space, and not that there is space in the pot. Similarly the Self, atma is called as shariiri, which is a name for all-pervading atma which is within the body.

antavantah means that which is endowed with end…. Meaning that which is perishable.

Adi Shankaracharya gives an interesting meaning to antavantah - अन्तः विनाशः विद्यते येषां ते  अन्तवन्तः । These which have an end or destruction are antavantah. यथा मृगतृष्णिकादौ सद्बुद्धिः अनुवृत्ता प्रमाणनिरूपणान्ते विच्छिद्यते स तस्य अन्तः  तथा  इमे देहाः स्वप्नमायादेहादिवच्च अन्तवन्तः | Just as the idea of reality, or being associated with the idea of existence सद्बुद्धिः अनुवृत्ता,  which continues with regard to water in a mirage मृगतृष्णिकादौ  , etc. is removed when examined with the means of knowledge, and that is its end प्रमाणनिरूपणान्ते विच्छिद्यते स तस्य अन्तः , so too these bodies तथा  इमे देहाः  have an end like bodies etc. in dream and magic स्वप्नमायादेहादिवच्च अन्तवन्तः.

Let us understand this in simpler language. antavanatah – the body has anta- end. Here Adi Shankaracharya looks at the end of the body as not the physical death of the body, but as FALSIFICATION of the idea that it has an independent existence, which falsification takes place when one is exposed to the Shastra pramana unfolded by a competent traditional teacher. FALSIFICATION of the idea of reality that one gives to the world and body, takes place when one understands them to be mithya.  Mithya  means a ‘dependent temporary reality borrowed, (in this case) from the Self. Now the person understands that the sense of existence or reality that one assigned to the body and the world, as independent objects, is false. The world, the body-mind-sense complex has a borrowed existence, borrowed from the Self that is SAT of the very nature of existence. When the world which includes the body is falsified, it is as good as non-existent – because it is understood as a dependent reality – just a form of existence given the name ‘world’, ‘body’ etc. Just as the dream is destroyed on waking, the mirage water is destroyed by knowing it to be a mirage, the body (notion of it being an independent reality) ends in the wake of knowledge.

अनाशिनः  is that which cannot be destroyed. This idea is repeated from verse 17. Another important fact about the Self is revealed in this verse – that it is aprameya -  that is it not an object of knowledge. Prameya means ‘object of knowledge’. aprameya means not an object of knowledge. This means that you cannot know the Self, atma, like you would know any other object like an apple. Does it mean that atma is non-existent? No – atma, exists. If it is existent then I should be able know it. Yes, in a general way you do  know that you exist. You are the aprameya atma. You don’t need to objectify yourself in any way, to know that you exist. Your existence declares itself daily as ‘I am’, without your seeing yourself as an object! You are self-evident.

Anyways lets look at some examples. The eye can see the entire world, yet it can’t see itself. Without a mirror you would not know the shape of your own eyes! Yet your eyes exist. Without your objectifying your eyes, you know that your eye exists, because you can see the whole world.

Again, suppose you are looking at a photograph of an event you attended. It has captured the event perfectly, the hall, the decorations , the people. Yet there is one thing which existed that that was not captured in the photo. That is the camera.  You do not objectify the camera physically in the photo, yet it is there. You do not require proof for the existence of the camera, it is very much there even though it is not seen in the photo.

Whatever we experience is like the photograph which cannot capture the camera. Whatever we experience as objects of our experience,  we can never experience as an object, the one in whose presence all experience takes place – we can never experience as an object separate from ourself, the conscious principle, the sakshi…. And we can never question its existence because it is oneself.  Ever the experiencer, never the experience. Ever the Seer, never the seen.  Ever the subject, never the object.

So as  atma , the Self, Arjuna, Bhishma, Drona etc  are immortal. As body, they are mortal.  Hey Arjuna, except the atma as it is, and the body as it is. Atma is satyam, independent limitless existence-consciousness and the body is mithya (a dependent, temporary reality). No need to cry over mithya. Stand up and fight. Here there is no command to take to war. It is only to encourage Arjuna to take up the war as his duty, which he had wanted to before he got overpowered by confusion and grief. Therefore “Fight” here is only an approval of what Arjuna had wanted. It is not a command.

कथम् | The scripture Gita is intended for eradicating sorrow, delusion, etc. which are the causes of the cycle of births and deaths; it is not intended to enjoin action. If you think that “Bhisma and other will be killed by me in battle. I alone am the slayer” – that notion of yours is completely false. How?

As evidences of this idea the Lord cites two Vedic verses: [Ka. 1.2.19-20.]

Om Tat Sat

Google Translate to Hindi - unchecked..

Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 2 Verse 16

 #bhagavad-gita

<click to expand picture>

Here in this verse

Lord Krishna says that there is no real being for that which is unreal. Whereas there is no non-being for that which is REAL.

This can be very confusing. So, we need to understand the meaning of ‘real’  and ‘unreal’ as Vedanta understands it.

‘Real’ nature of something as Vedanta defines it, that aspect of a thing which is always there, which does not change, which is intrinsic to it. For example, heat is intrinsic to fire. Fire is hot everywhere on this planet, even in Alaska which is full of ice and snow. Now supposing you heat some water using fire. The vessel in which the water is, will get hot. So will the water. Now if you put some rice in the water, that rice will also get heated. But is heat the nature of the vessel, or water or the vegetables. No … because when you remove the vessel from the fire, slowly the vessel, the water and the vegetables will get back to room temperature. So, heat is not the intrinsic nature of the vessel, or water or rice. Heat is only incidental to them. Heat was borrowed from fire, to heat them up.

Now let's look at the example of a clay pot. Before the pot was formed, it was clay. Now also in the form of a pot, it is actually clay, because anywhere you touch it, what you are touching is clay. If the pot breaks, what is left – clay… nothing but clay. So pot does not really have any independent existence – it has a borrowed existence from clay. In fact, you find that there is no independent substance called pot, all that is there is clay. While pot has a dependent borrowed existence from clay, clay has an independent existence. It is not dependent on the pot. Even if pot is gone clay, remains. So in this example, clay is real, ‘satyam’, having an independent existence from pot and pot, having no existence of its own, having a dependent, borrowed existence from clay is ‘unreal’ or what we call as mithya. Mithya is a technical term that describes a dependent reality. Satyam  is a technical term that points to the independent reality, on whom the dependent reality depends.

Now lets go further and look at clay. As far as pot is concerned, clay is its, cause, the independent reality. But what about clay? Clay is dependent on the atoms and molecules that make it up. So clay becomes a dependent reality, or asat, or mithya and atoms become its reality or satyam.

Is there something here that cannot be broken up any further, that is the reality of everything that sis here, the reality of the whole universe?

Pot IS          Clay IS

Clay IS          Molecule IS

Molecule IS  Atom IS

Let‘s find the truth of cloth.

Cloth IS           Fabric IS

Fabric IS          Yarn IS

Yarn IS             Yarn fibre IS

Fibre molecule IS

At every level of breaking down to any object’s cause, ISness is there … existence is. EXISTENCE (SAT) cannot be broken down. Whatever there is in the universe is just EXISTENCE  (SAT) with a particular form that we have given a name to. In fact, the truth, the SATYAM, the independent reality of the universe is EXISTENCE, (SAT) the isness of everything. And everything in the universe has a borrowed dependent existence from EXISTENCE itself. Nothing in the universe has an independent existence from EXISTENCE. EXISTENCE alone exists, it can never not be.

And what about the universe… its has only a borrowed existence. It is ASAT – unreal, mithya

Adi Shankaracharya explaining this verse writes । For cold and heat which are asat, unreal (meaning they are mithya, they having a dependent reality, do not have  any independent existence… there is no independent being for them… in fact they are like the pot which is not really there as an independent substance, they have no being.

Cold and heat and their causes, from the stand-point of absolute truth, do not really exist. Cold, heat etc all these are subject to change. And whatever changes is not permanent, not TRUTH. Just as a clay pot etc has no existence apart from clay its cause, so too all that changes is unreal, because they have no existence apart from their causes. One more reason that the pot is  asat (has no independent being) is because  before its production and after its destruction also it cannot be perceived. After all,  that which is REAL must exist in the same way at all times.

Thus that which is SAT, which is real, which is the independent reality, does not have non-existence. Nor does that which is ASAT, which is a dependent reality, have an independent existence, in fact it is has no BEING. It has only a dependent being like the pot.

SAT is not different from the SELF, the changeless conscious Being, aware of every experience, in whose presence all experiences take place. That  any object is, is known to you, the simple conscious being.  When you say ‘I Am’ it is the same as “Consciousness IS”. You can never deny or negate that you are the Conscious Being and  it is in Your Ever-Conscious Presence that the existence of anything is known. The consciousness that you are is self-evident and independent of anything revealed in your presence. Just like the sun is independent of all that is revealed in its light, you the Light of Consciousness is independent of all that is illumined in Your presence.

Therefore (after many refutations of the opponent) the body etc as well as the pair of opposites together with their causes, being asat (mithya – having no independent existence, having just a temporary dependent being), have no existence.

। So too the Self which is SAT, has no non-existence, since it is ever the same.

तत्त्वदर्शिभिः दृष्टः  the wise people who have clearly understood, without any doubts, the true nature of both SATYAM and MITHYA – the truth of both the real and the unreal is clearly understood by the wise.

।" You too, Arjuna, take refuge (by understanding) in the vision of the wise and castoff  sorrow and delusion and knowing that all pairs of opposites like heat and cold are but unreal, like the water of a mirage, may you endure them.  This is the implied sense.

Bhagavad-Gita Chapter 2 Verse 15

<click picture to enlarge>

In the previous verse Lord Krishna had said that the power of endurance which includes the capacity for patience, is very important. It allows us to not react immediately in terms of irritation, sharp words, punishing without finding out the whole story, etc.

In verse 12 and 13 Lord Krishna had revealed that the true Self is eternal, meaning it always unchangingly exists. In verse 14, the fact about the nature of the non-Self, the nature of the world was shown – that it is anitya, impermanent. And based on this fact that the Self is eternal and the non-self (which includes this body-mind-sense complex)  is impermanent, Lord Krishna  said, ‘may you cultivate forbearance towards the changing nature of life.

What will be the result of cultivating forbearance towards life? That is pointed out in this verse.

।(O Arjuna) verily, the person whom these, (cold and heat mentioned in Verse 14) do not disturb, the wise man, for whom sorrow and happiness are the same, who is free from happiness and sorrow when subjected to pleasure and pain, because of his  recognition of his true nature as the eternal Self, who has assimilated this knowledge fully, who endures the opposites, that person  becomes fit for moksha or liberation.

This person has recognized that the changing nature of the world cannot be changed. He also recognizes that within a limited scope, some things can be changed. So he works for changing what can be changed and accepts what cannot be changed.  And because of this non-resistance to what cannot be changed, this acceptance of what cannot be changed, the person is  not perturbed. Supposing there is beautiful flower in the garden. He appreciates it. And as is inevitable, when the rose fades and withers, he accepts that too. So too with any situation, when the situation happens, he welcomes it and when it departs, he does not resist.

Thus, towards both pleasant and unpleasant he is samah – equanimous. And so he does not get disturbed. He thus enjoys a leisure in his mind which as a sadhaka is required for inquiring into Vedanta. And of course when he discovers his truth to be the eternal Self, he stays firm in that truth.
