Upasana - smiling to Ishvara in the heart centre

This is a very relaxing and uplifting prayer meditation, in which you keep smiling to Ishta Devata, in the altar of your heart centre, and pray for antahkarana shuddhi. It fosters a deep sense of connect with Ishvara, at an emotional level.  It is adapted from Irmansyah Effendi's Open Heart Meditation.

Sadaa Purno'ham - Ever Full am I

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

I am the Consciousness that does not have to do anything, that does not have to know anything...
Naturally identified with the bms owing to karma
Yet free of ignorance of my true nature, I choose to identify with the bms, and
I choose to do. I choose to know.
When I drop all efforts to do something, to know something, I easily see myself as I am - purna
Purnata that is the self, does not go, does not disappear  when I do, or know....that is knowledge. Sadaa purno'ham.
I am the Consciousness that does not have to do anything, that does not have to know anything.....to be purna.
I am purna.Sadaa purno'ham

Meditation Series (1976) of Pujya Swami Dayananda – 1 to 8

This is a series of meditations done in 1976 by Pujya Swami Dayanandaji. Swamiji says that these meditations are meant to own up what is already known at the feet of a teacher. Therefore they are meaningful only for those persons who have studied the books of Vedanta properly, with the help of a competent teacher.
(1)
Imagine … a red hot iron ball.
It is brillaint, it is hot.
But the iron ball of itself, has no brilliance, has no heat.
Fire is present IN the iron ball.
Fire is in and through the iron ball.
…It is all over the iron ball.
Similarly ….
I think of my body.
The body, of itself, is inert, is insentient….
The body has no Awareness of its own.
It is aglow with sentiency because Consciousness is present in the body.
Consciousness is in and through the body…. It is all over the body.
See the truth of this ….
See…
All over the body, every part is conscious, sentient….
Part by part I see
… face…. face…. chest….. hands…. legs…
See every part …. it is conscious, it is sentient.
Consciousness is present in every part of the body…
It is all over the body.
It is in and thru the body,
See the truth of this ……
Om
(2)
Only when I am conscious of being conscious am I conscious.
I do not take for granted that I am this body ….
Nor do I take for granted that I am not.
I am conscious of my body….
I am consciousness IN the body ….
The Body is in Consciousness – Consciousness is not the body…
Consciousness is distinct from the body ….
I am conscious of the space to the left of me…
that space is in my Consciousness.
I am conscious of the space to the right of me…
that space is in my Consciousness.
The space abouve my head I am conscious of …
that space is in my Consciousness.
The Consciousness is free from all shapes ….
    free from all notions.
It is Shapeless Consciousness…
Shapeless Consciousness….
Shapeless Consciousness….
Om
(3)
I am Conscious of Breathing ….
The flow of breath, in and out, is in Consciousness.
I see the breath in Consciousness….
I am Conscious of the flow of breath…
I am Consciousness free from breath.
I am Consciousness…
Consciousness…
Consciousness….
Consciousness…
Om
(4)
Itself inert being made of inert materials the physical body is sentient.
The inert physical body gains sentiency because of the presence of the subtle body in it.
The subtle body is Conscious because I am (Sakshi), the Consciousness in it reflected – all over.
Therefore I am Awareness in the physical body.
Every square inch of my body is sentient …..
Conscious to touch …. from the top of my head to the soles of my feet …
Like even every part of a red hot iron ball …. because of the presence of fire.
I am Consciousness in the body making it conscious to touch.
As even in the body …. I am in the breath.
I am Conscious of my breathing ….
I watch my breathing in Consciousness.
In Consciousness, is the flow of breath, in and out ….
IN Consciousness, is the flow of breath …. in and out.
The breath falls within the scope of my Consciousness.
I am Conscious of my breath….
I am Consciousness free from breath.
I am Conscious of my breath …
I am Consciousness free from breath.
I am Consciousness….
Consciousness…
Consciousness….
Consciousness….
Om
(5)
I Am …. the Awareness in the ears.
The ears hear sounds
in Awareness.
The sounds which come to the ears differ ….
    the Awareness does not.
I Am Awareness in the ears.
Without reaction…
in Awareness, I hear the sounds.
I Am the Awareness in what is heard …. Itself free from sound.
I Am Awareness….
I Am Awareness….
Awareness….
Awareness….
Awareness….
Om
(6)
I am Conscious of my breath ….
I am Conscious of my breath …..
I am Conscious of my breath.
Deliberately I breathe in and out,
and thus become Conscious of my breath.
Now I just watch my breath, now I am just conscious of my breath.
Breathing takes place…
I am just Conscious of the flow of breath.
The movement of breath …. takes place in my Awareness.
In Awareness is the motion of breath.
Even as the air moves in space….
    the breath moves in Awareness.
I am the Shapeless Awareness
    in which the breath moves.
Shapeles Awareness am I……
Shapeless Awareness am I …..
I am Shapeless Awareness.
WHAT IS Shapeless Awareness?
Answer without a word….
Om
(7)
What is Shapeless Awareness?
Answer without thinking ….
    What is shapeless Awareness?
I am Shapeless Awareness….
Shapeless Awareness Am I.
Shapeless Awareness Am I.
Shapeless Awareness …. Shapeless Awareness ….
Shapeless Awareness……
Shapeless Awareness….
I am Shapeless Awareness…..
Shapeless Awareness…..
Shapeless Awareness……
Awareness…..
Awareness…..
Awareness ……
Om
(8)
Imagine ….. the space outside.
Imagine the space outside….
The Air moves freely in space.
Wherever it moves … it is in Space.
The Air is very much with the Space.
The space is not in a given place…..
It is All-Pervasive.
The Space is never affected by air, even though the Air is very much with the space.
Space is free from Air.
The Air in my nostrils ….
is in my Consciousness as even the Air outside is in Space.
I am Conscious of my breath….
as Air moves in Space ….. the breath moves in my Awareness.
The breath is never away from my Awareness as even the air and space outside.
The Awareness is never affected by the movement of breath as even sapce is never affected by the movment of air.
The Space never changes …
The Awareness never changes.
The Awareness is ever the same….. as even space is.
The Awareness never changes…..
    IT JUST IS….
Ever the same…
    IT JUST IS…..
With no frontiers,
    IT JUST IS.
Awareness IS …..
Awareness is I.
'I' Is Awareness ….. I am Awareness ….
Awareness is the 'I'…..
I….. Awareness ….. Is
I…… the Awareness…..

Meditation – Swami Viditatmananda

Om Namo Shivaya……. Om Namo Shivaya……. Om Namo Shivaya…….

Om Namah Shivaya… My salutations to Lord Shiva. This is an appointment with myself. An appointment with the self that is of the nature of peace and silence. And hence this is an appointment I look forward to. There is no anxiety, no excitement. Just to be myself.

All the time, I am trying to change … it is my opinion that I am not alright as I am and therefore I constantly strive to be different from what I am… so that I can become acceptable t myself… so that I would be comfortable with myself.

I am not comfortable with myself as I am and hence I think, that I should change … should become different from what I am and then I would be comfortabe with myself.

Since I am not comfortable with myself many of my activities are for escaping from myself. I keep myself busy. I keep myself occupied so that I do not have to confront myself. Generally I try to avoid myself.

This is happening because of my perception of myself … that I am a woman or a man, mother or father, worthy or not worthy. Successful not successful.

But Vedanta teaches us that these perceptions of myself are not correct. These are the false perceptions about myself. And therefore in this appointment I want to be objectitive with reference to my own self.

What is happening is that the changing body-mind is mixed with changeless self and therefore the self, the I appears to be limited. The sense of limitation is not the true perception of myself. Limitations belongs to this body.

It is true that the body is limited. Body is limited in time, It had a birth, it grows, it changes, matures, declines and someday, it will die also. These are all attributes of the body.

But can I say that I am the body? Is it not that I am aware of this body? Just as I am aware of the neighbours body. I can visualize my neighbours body in my mind, and so also I am aware of my body. I am aware of all the limbs and organs of the body. Hence the body is an object of my awareness. I am the awareror of the body. To see this fact is called creating a distance with the body.

Not a physical distance … it is not that I physically stay apart from the body … it is the distance of knowledge. I am the self … the body is drshya. I am the knower , the body is known. I am the awaror, the body is a subject of my awareness. The knower is always different from what is known.

Hence I, the knower of the body am different from the body. This body I am not.

The birth is in body. There is no birth for I. The growth, the changes, the decay, the decline, the age- all of these are attributes of the body. I am the witness - sakshi. I am the awaror and hence youth, middle age, old age, decay, decline, death, disease, all these I am not.

Young man, woman, father, mother … alll these are the attributes of the body. I am not father, I am not mother. I have no birth. I have no death. I am the knower of the birth, knower of the death of the body. knwoer of the father, knowere of the mother. Janma the birth is not in me. Mrtyu the death is not in mee. I am neither father nor mother. And at the same time, I have no father, I have no mother. Father, mother, relative friends, all of these are relations of the body … not the relations of the self.

These relations belong to the body. To the costume with which I play different roles. Sometimes father, sopmetimes son and sometimes friend, sometimes wife, sometimes mother, daughter, engineer, accountant, doctor… these are all the roles. The body is the costume, but I who play all these roles am different from the roles. The birth and death, the groth and old age, all these belong to the costume, to the role.

I am the conscious witness unaffected by the attributes of the roles. I am father with reference to body … but I am self with reference to myself.

na me mrtyu shanka… na may jati bheda pita naiva …. there is no question of death for I. There is no jaati for I … man or woman, human being or otherwise. … Indian or Canadian… this caste, creed, community, race is not in me. It is all in the body. I am the conscious witness independent of them. Pita naiva, naiva me maata … I have no father. I have no mother … meaning I am not a son. I am not a daughter. I am not a grandson nor a granddaughter. All of these are the roles with respect to the body. na may janma … the birth also is not in me. I am free from birth and eath and caste and creed and race and gender. Na bandhu na mitram … I am not a relative. I am not a friend. I have no relative. I have no friend. These are all relationships at the levl of the body.

Guru naiva shishya … I am not a Guru, nor do I have a Guru. I am not a shishya … nor do I have a shishya… Guru… shishya… the teacher… the taught… all relationships at the level of the roles. The friend is a role. Relative a role… disciple … a role. Teacher …a role. Father, mother, son, daughter all of these are roles. I am not the role. I have no role.

Transcending the roles, cidananda rupah … I am cit, the onsciousness, ananda …the joy, the wholness, the completmess…. shivohama … the silent, the auspicious I am.

Na may mrtyu shanka… na may jaati bheda … pitaa naiva mataa na janma

Na may …. guru naiva shishyam Cidananda rupah shivoham shivoham… (3)

Shiva … the silent … the unattached, the auspicious, the joyful. The silent I … I don't have to become Shiva … I have to recognize that I am Shiva inspite of this body which limited in every way, which may be called impure or inauspicious. inspite of it all, I am Shiva, the Auspicous, the Joyful, the Silent, the Untainted.

To see this nature of myself, is an appointment with myself. When I see myself as silent, as content, as self-sufficient, then there is no need to change …. no need to become. Free from the need to change… freedom from the need to become. I am free…. from every need..

A Meditation

Om Namo Shivaya….
Assume any comfortable posture. Relax the body part by part consciously. When I relax my body, I give up my body identification as I do in sleep. In sleep also, I don’t feel my body. In total relaxation also I don’t feel my body. I feel I am bodyless. I am out of the body. This is the sign of total relaxation.

Now observe your breathing. It is called pranavikshanam. In pranayama we regulate our breathing. In pranavikshanam, we are just aware of our breathing process. Pranavikshanam makes the breathing smooth relaxed and even. When the breathing is relaxed, mind also is relaxed. Because both are interconnected. I give a strong suggestion to the mind that I am not going to bother about anything. I don’t play any worldly roles in meditation.

We will practice a small manasa puja, offering flowers at the feet of the istha devata, God in any form we like.

Visualise the atmosphere for doing the puja. A puja room, a temple or ashram. You are also appropriately prepared to do the puja. And you are seated in front of the Lord, with a plate full of flowers in front of you. And you are ready to offer the flowers. While offering, you can repeat any particular nama connected to the Lord. And the nama is uttered while offering the flowers. And you clearly visualise flowers falling on the feet of the Lord – varieties of flowers. Just try this exercise for a few minutes – you can start now.

Now do the same puja in the puja room of your heart. First light three lamps – one of bhakti, the other of shraddha and the third of thanks. In the glow of these lamps, you become aware of the form of your ishtha devata – self-effulgent, self-revealing – suffused with golden light illuminating your heart – the light of the lamps merge in the light of the self-revealing Lord. You are ready to offer the flowers. While offering, you can repeat any particular nama connected to the Lord. And the nama is uttered while offering the flowers. And you clearly visualise flowers falling on the feet of the Lord – varieties of flowers.

Spend a few minutes in peaceful silence communing with your Ishtha devata – the Light of Consciousness, self-evident, self-revealing, Omniscient, Omnipotent, All pervading Lord who blesses you with his darshan in your heart.

Now listen quietly to what is being said :- (Swami Paramarthananda)

Imagine a brightly illumined room. Every object in the room is pervaded and illumined by the light. And therefore, I am able to experience the object. When I experience the object, I am experiencing the light also which pervades the objects. Whichever object I experience, it includes the experience of the light. Every object experienced includes the light experienced. I don’t require any special effort to experience the light. We take the light for granted. Even empty room experienced includes the light experienced because the emptiness itself is experienced because of the light. I don’t require any special effort to experience the light. I don’t require any special experience to recognize the light. I don’t require any guru to give the experience of light. All experiences include light experienced. My only problem is I take the light for granted. I don’t register the ever experienced light in my mind. A guru is required only to register this fact in my mind. The fact that light is ever experienced. effortlessly. He is required to turn our attention towards the ever experienced light. I come to know that the light pervading every object is free from the shapes of the objects. The illumined objects have different forms. But the illuminator light is formless. And being formless, it is limitless. Formless limitless light illumines the formed limited objects.

Our mind is exactly like this brightly illumined room. It is illumined by the light of conscious-ness. Every thought in the mind is pervaded by and illumined by the light of consciousness. The experience of any thought includes the experience of consciousness. In fact every thought is experienced because of consciousness.
Even the experience of an empty mind, thoughts-less mind, includes the experience of consciousness. Emptiness is experienced because of consciousness. I don’t require any special effort to experience consciousness. I don’t require any special experience to recognize consciousness. I don’t require any guru to experience consciousness. My only problem is I have taken the consciousness for granted. A guru is required only to register in the mind the ever evident fact. A guru is required to turn our attention towards the ever experienced, self-revealing consciousness.
Once our attention is turned towards the consciousness, we can know more about the nature of this consciousness. It pervades the thoughts of various forms. Itself is formless. The formless consciousness illumines all thought forms. And being formless, it is limitless. This ever evident consciousness is sakshi caitanyam. This is my essential nature. I am a sakshi caitanyam.

Thoughts arrive in the mind. I am.
Thoughts are resolved. I am. Active mind is, I am. Thoughtless mind is, I am.
Sakshi caitanyam ahamasmi. I am witness consciousness. I am witness consciousness. All features come and go. Physical features, emotional features and intellectual features - all are incidental. I use them, but they do not belong to me. My only permanent feature is formless consciousness. Nirakara caitanyam aham asmi. Formless consciouness I am. Just repeat these words and see the meaning. Formless consciousness I am.

This body-mind-sense complex I am not – I am the silent witness, awareness, cit-ananda I am the awareness, wholeness – cid ananda rupah shivoham shivoham cidananadah rupah shivoham sivoham
Mano buddhyahankara cittani naham
Na ca strotra jivhe na ca ghrana netra
Na ca vyoma bhuumi
Na tejo na vaayu
Cidaananda rupah shivoham shivoham
Cidaananda rupah shivoham shivoham
